That's All, Folks [Jan. 11th, 2009|10:20 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]
[Current Location |The Center of the Universe, Los Angeles]
[mood | thoughtful]

Well, I've decided I might as well just do this thing. I've created a wordpress blog for myself and after I finish this post I'm going to update the archive I made of my LJ (community posts that I want to grab will eventually follow) I won't be posting new material to my LJ anymore. I'll still check my flist periodically and may or may not add something to a comm here and there, but apart from that this is pretty much it for my LJ. I'm not planning on deleting my account, however. It'll be around until LJ goes away, pretty much.

I first posted to this journal on 1/19/2005 with the rhetorical interrogatory, "Ooh, ain't I angsty?" The four-year anniversary of that post is coming up in just over a week. I've enjoyed posting to my blog here and I'm glad of the friends and associations I've made here. I hope that at least some of them can continue after my departure.

Most of you either have my e-mail or chat handles, and some of you have my facebook. If you're interested, you know where to find me. If you don't have them, ask and ye shall receive. I  hope to see you on the other side.

Onoz! Teh Sky, It Is Falling! [Jan. 7th, 2009|06:07 pm]

[mood | thoughtful]

Well, I may have somewhat overstated that. You can forgive me later, I am sure.

As almost everybody on LJ is likely aware now, there are guys running around with "the end is nigh!" sandwich boards due to the signs of the times (to wit: the firing of over 2/3 of LJ's employees, likely an indication that LJ is going on life support before too much longer and getting the plug pulled entirely at some point).

While I'm not in a giant rush, I have decided that it might be wise to begin checking out some other blogging alternatives. I've got a social networking thing in facebook, but I want something that's specifically for blogging so I can keep my social network and my blog at least somewhat separate. I'll talk mostly about geeky stuff and odd news items etc as ever in the blog of course. Now to ponder on where to hop to. Wordpress is a possibility, as is blogspot. I hear that it's possible to import an LJ journal into wordpress as well, which is nice. I guess I'd best do some actual research on this pretty soon.

LJArchive's looking like a good thing, too.

Any suggestions? Are any folks on my flist heading off in any specific direction?

New Year, New TekTek [Jan. 1st, 2009|11:25 pm]

Yes, once in a while I do still relapse into fascination with this cracktastic little thing.

I figured new years would be a good time to post some new stuff, and revisions on some old ones including Venture (dun dun dun)!

I tweaked an avatar of myself to suit my new look. Huzzah.

Very slight tweak to Venture Smith so he can actually have an axe like he's supposed to instead of that thor-hammer.

I was finally able to make a version of Stone Fist that I'm fairly happy with. At least this one looks quite a bit like ol' Stoney. It's a lot tougher looking than the lame old chibi too.
LoA chibis and other stuff under the cut )

Even Memetards Put The Year In Review [Dec. 30th, 2008|11:27 am]

[mood | amused]

Yes, it's that meme that's sweeping my flist. I stoled it from you, and you know who you are. I'm adding links to the original posts though, because I march to the beat of a different drummer. Also, I have noticed that "sick at home" is apparently in Pittsburg. Interesting.

Copy the first line from the first post of each month, and post them in a journal entry. (excluding memes)

In honor of the impending return of GK:1943, I've decided to post some silliness.

I've been fiddling around with this silly thing again.

The chinese restaurant owners that came across this groovy little spider-frog were kind enough not to toss him in the pot. (amusingly, TekTek got pushed back to post 2!)

Washing your car to make it rain doesn't work.

Police: Texas man trying to cash $360 billion check arrested.

The SUV is Dead: Yahoo Editorial.

That is not a fortune.

Today, I stumbled across the following: apparently this critter, dubbed the "Montauk Monster" washed up on a beach in Montauk, NY.

Ninja Parade Slips Through Town Unnoticed Once Again.

I finally watched this film tonight, after meaning to for ages.

Accused Drunk Driver Ends Up Running Over Himself.

Recently when I was visiting a household full of folks from my church that also happens to be a household full of gamers, we got talking for a short while about game-related geektude.

So there you have it. Apparently, this year in LJ has been wacky news, random observations and TekTek.

I felt like sharing a couple of happies with you, because I'm awesome like that.

Teamwork, baby! I didn;t realize they train pandas to act like me. Penguin Santas!

I am normally hostile to putting jackets, sweaters etc on animals. However, somehow penguins in Santa suits get a pass. That might be the meds talking though. Also, the pandas have clearly been paying attention to the teamwork aspects of maneuver rules in Fate3/Spirit of the Century.

I'll make this brief, because we've all got stuff to do I'm sure.

Merry Christmas to all!

This day means many different things to many different people. Whatever your views on this precious reminder of who and what we care about (which hopefully does not in fact revolve around the collecting of swag) might be, I dearly hope and pray that your day is merry, the hours spent with those you love are many, and that the next year is better than the last.

God bless us, every one.

Recently when I was visiting a household full of folks from my church that also happens to be a household full of gamers, we got talking for a short while about game-related geektude. Hardly surprising, though it certainly wasn't the purpose or main portion of my visit. I explained the basic premise and some details of the system and magic cosmology to Legend of the Archons and they indicated that they'd love to do a tabletop playtest. Hmm... I may just have to take them up on that offer. It'd be very interesting seeing a pack of hardcore DnDers trying out an indie game like FATE.

Today as I was driving through K-town on the way to do my weekly grocery shopping, a observed that the woman in the car behind mine at the signal looked uncannily like the Dear Leader, Kim Jong-Il. Now, I wouldn't put it past the guy to fake his own seclusion/incapacitation/death and going undercover in drag ... for him, that would almost be rational behavior.

Anyhow, when I pointed this woman's resemblance to my wife, she gave one of the most explosive laughs I've heard from her in a very long time. Life is good.

now, at what point does a guy that's so drunk that he runs himself over with his car while being chased by a police cease to be an "accused" drunk driver and become an actual drunk driver? I think it's pretty clear here...

Your result for What Your Taste in Art Says About You Test...

Traditional, Vibrant, and Tasteful

14 Islamic, -10 Impressionist, 12 Ukiyo-e, -15 Cubist, -17 Abstract and 14 Renaissance!

Islamic art is developed from many sources: Roman, Early Christian, and Byzantine styles were taken over in early Islamic architecture; the architecture and decorative art of pre-Islamic Persia was of paramount significance; Central Asian styles were brought in with various nomadic incursions; and Chinese influences . Islamic art uses many geometical floral or vegetable designs in a repetitive pattern known as arabesque. It is used to symbolize the transcendent, indivisible and infinite nature of Allah.

People that like Islamic art tend to be more traditional people that appreciate keeping patterns that they learned and experienced from their past. It is not to say that they are not innovative personalities, they just do not like to let go of their roots. They like to put new ideas into details and make certain that they will work before sharing them with others. Failure is not something they like to think about because they are more interested in being successful and appreciated for their intelligence. These people can also be or like elaborate things in their life as long as they are tasteful. They tend to prefer geometric patterns and vibrant colors.

Take What Your Taste in Art Says About You Test at HelloQuizzy

Well, I do tend to like some persian and islamic stuff but usually I actually prefer chinese paintings, and I adore Northern Renaissance work (like Jan van Eyck and Dürer) more than the better-known southern stuff except of course for Da Vinci, who's almost as high in my estimation as Dürer. Plus I'm very fond of a lot of 20th-21st century stuff. Then again, I'm better versed in art and art history than most people are, so my tastes are possibly more eclectic as well. The pieces that were in this quiz poorly represented my tastes in those scores, but the personality take's not far off. That particular piece with the horses is simply lovely though.

That is indeed most excellent. It's cut together superbly. Also one of my favorite holidays, one of my favorite bands and two of my favorite films.

Plus, yet another cool thing about Danny Elfman: you know that if both Bonejangles and Jack Skellington are a man's film avatars, he's gotta rock.

This is a trial design specifically for a mask & head (where one ends and the other begins is largely unexplained in setting) for a Lord of Winter known as The Horned One. I'm really not settled on it, but I
do like the design overall.

I'm still working on what to do with the rest of the body. I was this creature to look barbaric and primal
yet also alien and otherworldly.

The Horned one embodies the predator/prey relationship, the Darwinian hostility-yet-equilibrium of
the universe and so on.

SAD: Balor Prelim Design
by *uhlrik on deviantART

Though I've not posted anything about my ongoing Sketch-a-day thing lately, it's still ongoing. Since I'm most of the way done with one of my more battered sketchbooks, I'm focusing on using that until it's full so there's not been a lot of the digital stuff to post here.

However, I really wanted to put this idea down and sketchbook work didn't feel right for this one, so back to the tablet I went. It's not really a finished piece (but then, finished work isn't the point of SAD, in case ya haven't cottoned on to that yet). What it is, however, is a concept piece helping me get this idea down before it flies out of my head.

I've been thinking of various ways thet the Lords of Winter might manifest if they were to appear in a manner that mortal beings can comprehend them. They're unutterably ancient and powerful primordial forces that can simultaneously be referred to as mighty totem spirits, demon lords, faerie princes and demigods. They aren't truly finite beings in quite the way that you and I think of ourselves as beings: they're really more like forces, and in actuality they're pretty much formless as well, though they can form bodies as well.

I've been doing a number of sketches of Lords of Winter lately and have been pretty much dissatisfied, especially with Balor (the one shown here). Balor tends to end up looking a bit like a Plaguebearer of Nurgle, and while I like Plaguebearers, I wanted something else for the He of the Evil Eye.

So I hit upon the idea that perhaps these primordial forces might have made or acquired artifact masks that would allow them to contain a portion of their ineffable nature, essentially creating avatars of themselves in order to directly interact with other beings.

Anyhow, Balor here is supremely bad news. He/it is something of a personification of the will to dominate and ravage, arguably the essence of the tyranny of vast, looming and forbidding nature. Not a chap that one wants to encounter.

commentary welcome.
